The Ars Poetica, a poem about poems, invites us to explore and articulate our own definitions, values, and practices of poetry and poetry-writing. We will read and discuss a wide range of ars poetica together, and then compose our own within a framework of inquiry, wonder, and liberatory possibility. As poet and scholar Edward Hirsch reminds us in A Poet’s Glossary, “[t]he ars poetica, like the defense of poetry, becomes a necessary form when poetry is called into question and freedom is endangered.”
